Truthdig: Brazil Recognizes Palestine
In a public letter addressed to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday, outgoing and popular Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva formally recognized Palestine as an independent state within its 1967 borders.
Meanwhile, Israel is angry, saying Brazil’s decision is disappointing and problematic to the peace negotiations at hand. —JCL

The Daily Telegraph: Spain to declare State of Alert over air traffic control strikes
Spain is due to declare a State of Alert at an emergency cabinet meeting called for 9am Saturday in the wake of a lightening walkout by Spanish air traffic controllers at 5pm on Friday which has since paralysed Spanish air space.

Washington Post: Constitutional provision jeopardizes sweeping food safety bill
The Food Safety Modernization Act may be derailed this session because of a constitutional provision giving the House authority for enacting new taxes and not the Senate. Certain provisions of S510 could be construed as taxes. If they are found to constitute new taxes (by the House Ways and Means Committee) the Senate vote -- and the law -- are null and void.

North Korean undercover journalists show the desperate conditions people live in and the level of oppression people endure in their daily lives are creating discontent previously unseen.
"The authorities no longer command the fear and respect of the people," said Jiro Ishimaru, editor of Asiapress International. "That's an enormous change that is taking place in North Korea."
