LET ME EXPLAIN WHY THE CROWD CHEERS: The Perito Moreno is a glacier that advances into a lake (Brazo Rico) and a channel (Canal de los Tempanos). When it hits land ( the Peninsula de Magallanes) the glacier obstructs the flow of water raising it in one side about 80 feet. The water pressure, witch is higher on the bottom makes the ice slowly give up forming a bridge that gets bigger and bigger until it collapses. This is a cycle that has been happening for many years and attracts a lot of people when the bridge gets to big to sustain itself. The first collapse known was in 1917 and it happened 16 times since. The cycle used to be every four to six years. But there was a 16 years pause from 1988 until 2004. Then again in 2006 and 2008. It is now expected to fully collapse anytime. So there is nothing wrong or new about the blocks of ice breaking of. What could mean something is the timing of the cycles. Here is a video explaining how it happens (IN SPANISH): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fgL8o9Gh54
