Hey! Did you know that there’s a molecule produced naturally inside of the human body that has been proven in scientifically-documented, placebo controlled research studies to transport human beings out of their current physical and mental state into what can only be described as an alternate plain of existence? Course not, right? Clearly if there was such a discovery, you would have heard about it, would have been a huge story.

“Portal to Another Dimension Discovered in Our Body Chemistry” The headline might have read.

Imagine if people were given high doses of this molecule in clinical trials, and then once they were transported into this other-worldly place, they felt like they had been there before. What if their descriptions of the place and their experience varied, but they all insisted they went to this same place and it was very real and not just a hallucination?

Hey! Have you ever had a dream? What are those things? Interesting, wouldn’t you say, that here we have this molecule that sends us to another place, and every single night we all have to close our eyes, shut down our body and prepare to achieve REM sleep so that we can go to a different place that we spend nearly half our life but rarely talk about. What an odd coincidence. From what we remember, when we go to this place, we interact with other people and have wild experiences that are vivid, and we feel profoundly connected to these journeys we take every night.

Would you find it strange to note that the people who had these consistent, other-worldly experiences from this molecule in clinical trials could only remember what had happened immediately after they ‘came back’ to their regular state of mind and consciousness… and their once vivid memories of the experiences were gone within minutes of returning from their journey? Just like a dream when you wake up in the morning!

Well, it’s all true friends, and it isn’t some wacky theory, or the crackpot hippie dippy ramblings of a drug addict or a psychotic. It’s the documented, pretty impossible to deny results of a peer reviewed, rigidly academic series of clinical trials performed by Dr. Rick Strassman, MD, from 1990 to 1995. I first found out about DMT (AKA "The Spirit Molecule") from this viral video by Joe Rogan:

I know! Who knew the guy from Fear Factor was so cool and insightful, right? Oh, sorry, I mean “Hey! Wait a second… am I the only one who heard all that stuff he just said? Why isn’t every single human being on Earth talking about this DMT?!”

I went on to read Dr. Strassman’s fascinating book, and it had great personal ramifications for me and some very personal baggage I carried my entire life. But more importantly… doesn’t the mere existence of this ‘endogenously’ (aka internally) produced molecule in the human being set off some alarm bells for anyone else? To me, this is a stop the presses, game changing, holy fuck this might just be the beginning of the answer to a whole truck load of humanities’ most unanswerable and tormenting questions kind of discovery. I knew immediately after hearing Rogan’s rant that DMT had massive ramifications for the human experience and the future of the species. Philosophical, medical, behavioral and psychological mysteries that have confounded our existence for millennia, it seems to me can largely be explained by DMT. Maybe I’m wrong, though. The studies were concluded in the mid 90’s and Dr. Strassman himself states repeatedly that despite his incredible research… so what? What does it mean?

I’d like to propose that what it means is a starting point, a truly legitimate beginning for future (and hopefully current) generations of humans to finally explore a synthesis of spirituality and science. DMT is the missing link for two once incompatible entities. DMT is Scientific Spirituality… it’s heavy stuff. It’s new and exciting, and dangerous and scary. But wholly necessary. This is as profound as it gets. To be honest I’m a little shocked we’re not all scrambling to find out what this stuff is, what it does, and why it’s in every living organism and where this place is that it takes us and how it takes us there, and where there is and, and, and!

I would hypothesize a few other things that DMT could be strongly linked to:

- The fine line between genius and insanity (and many forms of previously inexplicable mental illness)

- Where thoughts and ideas come from

- A tangible explanation for the collective unconscious

- Dreams

- Music

- Art

- The social and behavioral abnormalities of artists and high level thinkers

- Mathematics (and why some people are great at them and others are terrible)

- Pretty much every religion ever.

I don’t have the time or the expertise or resources to dissect the correlation of DMT with all of the above in this simple little article, so I’ll do my best to sum it all up.

DMT is part of being human and of being alive on this earth. It is in all living things, and it is made in us. It is essentially a valve. Whatever the mechanics and biology are, it is a figurative valve that can be opened and closed… a valve that, once opened fully, connects us to this other, DMT Realm. There we can find ideas, thoughts, art, math, insanity, music and many other things. This realm is both heaven and hell, it is god and the devil, nirvana and karma and fate and love and hate and science and religion all wrapped up in one. It just is. It is life. It’s that nagging voice in your head. It’s you. It is the unexplainable phenomenon, the indescribable soul we all understand, but can’t truly define with numbers or words. It is our dreams. It is where we go when we die. It is where we come from when we are born. It is the key to understanding and perhaps maximizing the human experience if we let ourselves realize it. If we’re willing to give it a closer look, it’s the skeleton key we’ve been looking for. It’s also possibly the great spiritual awakening and the beginning of the new age spoken about in so many prophecies. The great challenge of this time in our history is to reconcile our spiritual and mental state with our physical and tangible world… with our actions, behaviors and our sheer methods of existence. It’s the only chance we’ve got that I can see.

As George Carlin loved to say: “Language always gives us away.”

We call people who see only what is accepted and uncontroversial as 'close-minded.’

When we have an idea, it 'comes to us.' From where, might I ask? From the same place, it’s not ’your’ idea, you just found it. We’re a vessel, a delivery mechanism.

The tortured artist or thinker is often accused of being 'stuck in their head' and unable to deal with what others consider basic social etiquette, unaware or unconcerned with the outside world. To a person whose valve is closed, this is frustrating and infuriating. ‘I don’t understand why you can’t just do basic things!?’

Some people are born with an open valve; a valve which connects them to the DMT Realm more than others who are more “Down to Earth.” Not off somewhere else, lost in their head.

We need all kinds of people to get out of the mess we’re in. We need pragmatists and straight forward brains as much as dreamers and intellectuals. But what we really need is to understand who we all are, how we all work and how to maximize our purpose, how to find common ground and move forward cohesively and rationally. Stop dividing ourselves up and realize that we’re all just hanging on by the same thread, we’re all tapped into the same mainframe. Might sound like the stuff of fairy tales, and you can feel free to dismiss me all you want. But my fellow human beings, mark my words:

The future of this species can go two ways.

1. Understanding and respecting DMT and that place it takes us every night.

or

2. Continuing to ignore the most monumental discovery of our time.
